UK driving licence is no longer valid for Spanish Residentes after May 1st, 2022

May 3, 2022

Update: The validity of British driving licenses has been updated. Read more in our latest news on the UK driving licences agreement.

In continuation to our previous updates on driving in Spain for UK driving licence holders after the Withdrawal Agreement, it has been announced that from 1st May 2022, those who have resided in Spain for 6 months will no longer be able to drive in Spain using their UK licenses.

All UK driving licence holders who have lived in Spain for 6 months and have not yet exchanged their UK driving licence for a Spanish one, will not be able to drive in Spain. Therefore, from 1st May, anyone who was living in Spain prior to 1st January 2022 must have exchanged their licence to drive here, whilst anyone who moved after the aforementioned date will be able to continue using their UK licence until 6 months has elapsed since their arrival.

Anyone with a valid licence from Guernsey, Jersey or the Isle of Man must also obtain a Spanish licence within 6 months of becoming resident. You cannot currently exchange your licence for a Spanish one and you must apply for a Spanish licence as a non-EU national, which will include taking both a theory and practical driving test.
