Update: The validity of British driving licenses has been updated. Read more in our latest news on the UK driving licences agreement.
British expats with a UK driving licence will now only be valid for 6 months after they became resident here in Spain, or until 31st December 2021. If you lived in Spain before 1 January 2021 and registered your details and intention to exchange with the DGT before 30 December 2020, you should request an appointment with the DGT to exchange your UK licence before 31 December 2021.
To book an appointment at a DGT office, click on this link to find a center and an appointment.
You will be asked to provide the following documents:
- Fill in this form.
- Bring your TIE/ residence card and valid passport.
- A valid UK driving licence.
- A driving medical certificate.
- A recent passport sized photograph.
- Proof of payment of the 28,30€ fee. You can pay online via this link.
After this appointment, they will give you a provisional permit that will be valid for 3 months, but the actual permit will be posted to you as soon as it is ready. You will still be able to use your Spanish licence in England and other places abroad when you are visiting for short trips.
